The Kench Method is a concurrent strength system for distance runners: progressive barbell training, dosed and scheduled so it builds structural durability without competing with the running programme.
The problem
Runners train aerobic fitness, long runs, and workouts with care. Force production, tissue tolerance, and posture under fatigue often stay untrained. That gap is the chassis.
When progress stalls or form folds late in a race, the default answer is more mileage. That is the Mileage Trap: seeking every answer inside the variable you already maximise.
Endurance Collapse Chain
Fatigue accumulates. Posterior-chain output drops. Pelvic control degrades. Stride shortens. Trunk organisation slips. Posture folds. Pace and form fail. Fuel and pacing still matter. So does whether the body ever owned progressive load in training.

Positioning
Core concepts
The engine is aerobic and metabolic fitness. The chassis is structural durability under fatigue. Race day grades both. Volume alone does not invent structure.
Decades of racing can coexist with day one under the bar. That window is an advantage. It closes. Start light. Log. Film. Do not spend it on ego.
Two well-designed sessions per week are usually enough when lifts are progressive, recovery is real, and running still owns the sport. Busy is not durable.
Squat, deadlift, overhead press, bench. Complete coverage. Zero waste. Accessories earn their place. They do not replace the main work.
Plan, perform, film, log, change one variable. Every session is an experiment. Memory is not a training system.
Add a little when the form standard is met. Micro-load presses. Hold when film fails or running stress spikes. Ugly overload is practice for collapse.
About 72 hours between hard strength sessions by default. Compressing the window stalls lifting and running. Masters runners treat spacing as high priority.
Film working sets. Review the same day. One cue. Log it. Apply next session. Then load. Form creep under the bar becomes form collapse at kilometre 35.
Sleep, protein floor, and session spacing are programme variables. When life compresses capacity, protect recovery before adding volume.
Strength moves with the running calendar. Progress in base. Hold in peak. Reduce stress into taper. Structure is built before race week, not during it.
When load sticks: form first, then recovery, then programming. Do not invent a new plan before the camera and the calendar have spoken.
Linear progression ends. Standards remain. The wall is not purely a fitness problem. It is at least partly an engineering one.
The 2-Day Protocol
Exact prescriptions live in the book and in 1:1 coaching. The skeleton stays stable so the system can run beside serious running.
Squat pattern + overhead press. Minimal accessory only if it earns its place.
Deadlift or hinge + bench. Same rule on accessories: zero waste.
About 72 hours between A and B. Example: Monday A, Thursday B.
Long run and key sessions stay protected. Easy runs the day after lifting should not feel significantly harder. If they do, extend the window.
Film working sets. Log loads and one cue. Jump only when the standard holds.
